Hypnosis Myths
Separating Fact from Fiction

The most common myth about hypnotists is being complete control over the individual’s mind. In reality, hypnosis is a state of heightened focus and suggestibility, and individuals always retain control over their actions and can reject suggestions that go against their values or beliefs.
Other myth implies that hypnosis is only effective on individuals who are weak-willed or gullible. In truth, hypnosis is a natural and common phenomenon that can be experienced by people of various personality types and levels of suggestibility. Clinical hypnotherapy is a growing practice. It can help treat a wide variety of health problems, such as phobias and irritable bowel syndrome. Plus, it can help break unhealthy habits, such as smoking. Unfortunately, portrayals of hypnotherapy in movies and on stage have created many myths about hypnotherapy.
Hypnosis is a Form of Sleep: This myth assumes that hypnosis is similar to being asleep or unconscious. However, during hypnosis, individuals are in a relaxed yet focused state of awareness where they can respond to suggestions and engage in therapeutic
Hypnotherapy makes you act against your will or share your secrets. Your hypnotherapist is there to help you—not manipulate you. “Many confuse ‘mind control’ with hypnosis. Hypnosis enhances one’s self-control,”.
Hypnotherapy doesn’t work on “smart” people. One persistent myth is that you have to be gullible to achieve hypnosis. In fact, studies have actually revealed the opposite. “People with low IQ are notoriously difficult to hypnotize,” “Smarter people are generally easier, possible because of the greater overload of messages they incur every day.”

As Your Psychotherapist,
I Passionately Facilitate This Mind and Body Coherence.

A useful way to understand the mind is to divide it into the conscious and unconscious minds. The conscious mind is the thinking, perceiving, judging part that exists through the five senses, which carry signals to the nervous system and the brain. It defines our thoughts, actions, and awareness. By contrast, the subconscious mind is the storehouse for all our memories, emotions, behaviours, habits, beliefs and values. It records and holds everything we see, hear, touch, taste and think. The unconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges and memories, which are outside of our conscious awareness. All of our behaviours are driven from the unconscious mind. Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy can help bring our unconscious feelings to the surface, so we can understand and alter unhelpful feelings stored in the subconscious. This allows us to reveal deep-rooted thoughts about our experiences, our world, and the people around us to obtain a balanced frame of mind.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy, has been used as a tool to improve mental health for well over a century. Psychotherapy tends to have a past and present focus. The purpose of psychotherapy is to help us change our behaviours and overcome whatever is holding a person us back from a balanced life. It allows us to look at ourselves objectively and recognise blind spots in our thinking. We all have behaviours and thoughts that we are not aware of.
As your psychotherapist, I can help you learn things about yourself that will awaken you to a better understanding of what makes you, you. When we are more self-aware, we feel empowered to transform unhelpful beliefs, compulsions, thoughts and emotions into positive thoughts and helpful behaviours. Self-awareness drives self-improvements that improve our overall wellbeing mental health.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a state from which you can make extremely powerful changes in your life. It is the state in which you are the most receptive, creative, and intuitive. What happens during hypnosis is the agreed surrender of your body and mind, which allows you to relax fully and open your mind to safe suggestions and positive changes delivered by a trained and trusted psychotherapist.
A number of ailments can be treated with professional hypnotherapy, from obsessions to anxieties, phobias, depression, eating disorders, insomnia and even the physical pain associated with cancer or migraine. Hypnotherapy has also been proven effective for increasing self-confidence and self-esteem, and even improving athletic performance.

What Clients Say

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the differences between hypnotherapy and hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a tool and hypnotherapy is the utilisation of that tool. Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic process, which is applied by a professional mental health therapist such as a psychotherapist, psychologist or medical doctor. Hypnosis a process where suggestions are given to a person in a trance state.

How does Hypnotherapy work?

It sends us into a trance state. In this state, we are fully conscious but we block out most of the stimuli around us. What makes the trance state remarkable is the way connections are being made between the conscious and subconscious mind. While we are a trance state, the therapist can access our subconscious to help us better understand and recognise the reasons for our behaviours and address issues that manifest.

Is hypnotherapy effective? What does the science say?

Hypnotherapy is an evidenced-based mental and physical health treatment technique (Journal of Heart-Centred Therapies, 2010). During the process of hypnosis, the subconscious is instantly and easily accessible. Therefore, many therapists find hypnotherapy more effective and faster than talk therapy.

Is hypnosis dangerous?

Hypnosis is not dangerous. However, it should only be done by a well-trained therapist. Some people experience dizziness or dopiness for a short period after a session.

Can hypnosis force people to act against their will?

The short answer is, no. Hypnosis is not mind control, and therefore it does not take away free will. However, it is true that hypnosis makes people more suggestible and open to suggestion.

Is hypnosis like sleep?

Studies of brain activity have confirmed that hypnosis is not like sleep. Hypnotic states are associated with increased theta wave activity. Delta is the dominant brainwave when sleeping.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes everybody can be hypnotised–some people are more susceptible than others. Approximately 10% of the world population has low susceptibility.

How do you know if hypnosis worked?

The impact of hypnosis is seen in the degree that it affects direct change. For example, someone who undergoes in hypnosis to let go of anxiety will experience a significant decrease in anxiety after hypnosis.

How is coaching different to psychotherapy?

Generally speaking, coaching is more focused on helping people achieve future goals, while psychotherapy tends to have more of a past and present focus. In psychotherapy the focus is on healing from past, while in coaching the focus is on getting to where you wish to be next.

What are the benefits of coaching?

Coaching leads us to experience new perspectives on personal challenges and opportunities and enhanced thinking and decision making. When we commit to personal growth though coaching, we can expect to see positive results in our productivity, sense of wellbeing–both professionally and personally–and we will reach goals and consistently meet targets.

What happens when you hire a coach?

The coach and client will decide the frequency of sessions, how they will take place (face-to-face or teleconference), and the duration of the coaching arrangement (3, 6 or 12 months).

When would you hire a coach?

  • If there is a goal or opportunity at stake

  • If there is a gap in knowledge, skills confidence or resources

  • If there is a desire to accelerate results

  • If your style of relating is ineffective or not supporting the achievement of personal goals

  • If there is a lack of clarity and there are choices to be made

  • If you are highly successful and you need resources to deal with your success

  • To help you identify core strengths and how best to leverage these
